About Victoria General Hospital and This Year's Goal

This year the tournament is raising funds to purchase a CPAP system for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Victoria General Hospital.

A CPAP system is a sophisticated non-invasive ventilator that provides continuous positive airway pressure to reduce the work of breathing needs of premature and critically ill infants. Victoria General Hospital is home to the only Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on Vancouver Island. There are only three Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Units in British Columbia, including the one at Victoria General Hospital (the other two are in Vancouver). A Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides the widest variety of advanced care available for all newborns, including surgery. Each year nearly 600 tiny babies receive care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Victoria General Hospital. This includes infants from all over Vancouver Island as well as from elsewhere in the province.

Babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit need continuous observation and monitoring, intensive nursing, and sometimes life-supporting care such as breathing assistance. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Victoria General Hospital is responsible for newborns who require complex one-to-one care around the clock. The Victoria Hospitals Foundation is a registered charity that supports excellence in health care at Vancouver Island's largest hospitals - Royal Jubilee and Victoria General - by raising funds for priority medical equipment and patient care programs.
